Réponse logique...

The king asked prisoner X first, Y second and Z third. Each heard the others’ answers. What did each prisoner answer when is turn came? Were they set free?

Le roi interrogea en premier le prisonnier X, puis Y et enfin Z. Chacun put entendre la réponse des autres. Qu’a pu répondre chacun des prisonniers quand son tour est venu ? Ont-ils été libérer?

3- If X had seen two black poles instead, what would he have known? Si X avait vu 2 poteaux noirs à la place, qu’aurait-il compris?

4- As it was, what answer did X give the king? De ce fait, quelle est la reponse de X au roi?

“I don’t know” / Je ne sais pas

5- When Y heard X’s answer, he knew X had not seen two black poles. There are two other combinations X might have seen, Y thinks. What are they? Quand Y entend la réponse de X, il sait que X n’a pas vu 2 poteaux noirs, il y a deux autres combinaisons possibles, lesquelles ?

White and black or 2 white / Blanc et noir ou 2 blancs

6- What colour pole could Y see? Quelle couleur de Poteau Y peut voir?

White / blanc

7- Could Y tell whether his pole was black or white? Y peut-il dire si son poteau est blanc ou noir?

8- When the king asked him, what did he have to say? Quand le roi l’interroge, que doit-il répondre?

“I don’t know” / Je ne sais pas

9- When Z hears Y’s answer, he had to think hard and fast. Like Y, he realized that X had not seen two black poles. So Z knew that at most only one of the two poles (his and Y’s) could be… what colour? Quand Z entend la réponse de Y, il doit réfléchir vite et bien. Comme Y, il a compris que X n’avait pas vu 2 poteaux noirs. Donc Z qu’au plus seul un des poteaux (entre le sien et celui de Y) peut être de quel couleur ?

10- Z also knew this : if Y had seen that Z’s pole was black, Y would’ve known his own pole was… What colour? But Y didn’t. Z sait aussi ceci : si Y avait vu un poteau noir, il aurait pu dire que son propre poteau était de quelle couleur ? Pourtant il ne l’a pas dit…
